Image Culling

At the beginning of our process, we start with finding images. These images give us a visual representation of how the play makes us feel, show the themes, colors we may think of, etc.

These were the agreed-upon photos from the design team and director.

The Addams Family Musical

Design Statement:

The Addams Family is about learning to accept the differences of those you love. What it means to be an Addams is challenged by Wednesday when she falls in love with a "normal" boy, Lucas Beineke. Wednesday and Lucas are ready to start their lives together but are met with their parent's disapproval due to their stark differences. Through a family dinner gone wrong, it is exposed that each member of the household has secrets of their own. After searching within themselves and learning to be truthful toward one another, the two families accept Wednesday and Lucas for who they are and the two families become one.
With the Addams Family having a well-known look, the goal of the design team was for our family to be unique. Our overall objective was to build an aesthetic that was true to the Addams we all know, while also blending our creativity into the world.
Through my design, I created a spooky and quirky environment. I utilized dramatic shifts in sharp reds, deep blues, and bright magentas while featuring them against cobwebs found on set. Ornate window gobos were chosen to help define the interior of the Addams' home, equipped with their ghoulish coloring. Highlighting comedic elements such as the asides from Gomez were accomplished through quick spotlights and the use of the theatre's house lights. Having gobos move, like a dancing moon, was also created to accompany Fester.
